Market Identifier Code (MIC)
A market identifier code, also known as MIC, is a unique four-character code (starting with a randomly-assigned alphanumeric character, followed by a three-digit code to signify the market) used to identify various stock markets and securities trading exchanges. These codes are defined by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in ISO 10383.
Market Identifier Codes (MICs) come in different types, one of which is the market segment MIC. This type of MIC is used to identify a particular section of an entity covered by the code that specializes in one or more specific instruments or is subject to different regulations. The introduction of market segment MICs was intended to increase accuracy in identification. Each market segment MIC has a parent MIC, also known as an operating MIC. An operating MIC is used to identify the specific entity that operates an exchange, trading platform, regulated or non-regulated market, or trade reporting facility within a particular country.
